The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has long been using the power of sport and education in its programmes to foster development of refugee children and youth and to ensure tolerance and understanding between communities.
In coordination with sports-oriented partners such as Nike, FC Barcelona, the UN Foundation, the International Olympic Committee, Right to Play, and the International Volleyball, Badminton and Basketball Federations, UNHCR continues to expand its sports programmes in refugee camps, mostly in Africa, Asia, South America and Eastern Europe.
Ninemillion.org: Through education and sports activities in over 20 countries, the ninemillion programme reached more than 460,000 persons of concern in 2010. The campaign is planning to expand current activities and ensure implementation of sports and education programmes in over 30 refugee settings by 2011. The ninemillion.org campaign was launched in 2006 by UNHCR in partnership with NIKE and Microsoft to provide more than nine million refugee children better access to quality education, sport and technology. The initiative seeks to maximize refugee capacity to support children and youth’s access to quality sports, education and technology opportunities, with a specific focus on girls. To achieve this aim, UNHCR works in close partnership with governments, UN agencies, private donors and local and international NGOs.
