Welcome to the United Nations. It's your world.

SPORT FOR DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE THE UN SYSTEM IN ACTION

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) was set up in 1947 by ECOSOC as one of five regional commissions of the United Nations. Its major aim is to promote pan-European economic integration and to contribute to economic development. A globally recognized UNECE activity concerns road safety. There are over 700 million cars on the roads today worldwide. While this is the consequence of economic growth and prosperity, this has also a downside linked with road safety. The human, economic and social cost of road traffic accidents is increasing yearly. The estimated social cost of worldwide annual toll of 1.3 million deaths and 50 million injuries due to road crashes is estimated to be equal to 2% of the world GDP.

1. Conference Improving Road Traffic Safety in South-Eastern Europe - Halkida, Greece, 25-27 June 2009

This regional conference involved international organisations, national delegates, the private sector and relevant NGOs. Representatives from the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and players from the Greek national basketball teams (both female and male) wholeheartedly supported the event and its message regarding road safety. In addition, they signed and widely promoted a declaration regarding road safety that was widely distributed throughout the country, as well as covered by the media.

2. Partnership with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA)

In the context of the EuroBasket 2009 in Poland, the World Championships 2010 in Turkey and the EuroBasket 2011 in Lithuania, UNECE partnered with FIBA around campaigns addressing the issue of road safety.
